Sassafras is a tree very closely associated with America. As the early American wonder drug, it was our first 'money-crop' and object-in-trade. In 1622 the Jamestown Colony was committed by the Crown to produce thirty tons of sassafras, with a penalty of ten pounds of tobacco imposed on each man who did not produce one hundred pounds of it.
Sassafras was supposed to cure almost any ailment. It was used as a tea or a tonic, and soon became the favorite drink of England. When rumors started that sassafras retarded old age, the trade of this tree reached its peak.
The smell and taste of sassafras is unlike any other spice, and legend has it that the aroma will keep away 'sickness and evil'. Spoons were made from sassafras wood; baby cradles were inlaid with it; noggins of sassafras added extra flavor to drinks; and Bible boxes were made of the wood to 'ward off evil spirits'. It was believed that a ship with sufficient sassafras in her hull would never be wrecked or sunk. Even today, the aroma of sassafras still permeates the holds of many old ships.
Exquisite Bethlehem Holy Land Olivewood: This rare wood is quite aromatic, and turns and polishes to a very smooth, beautiful creamy base with dark textures and lines running through it. The wood makes a very exciting pen or wine bottle stopper, and is a cherished gift or keepsake.
The wood we use is acquired from the routine trimming of the olive trees that grow in the Holy City of Bethlehem in the Holy Land. This trimming process is necessary to maintain the health and vigor of these trees, some 4000 years old.
NO TREE IS DAMAGED OR DESTROYED IN THIS PROCESS!
